In San Diego, we’re the envy of many other cities in California and the rest of the country because we have such an abundance of “shorts weather.” But for those who have spider veins and varicose veins, San Diego’s mild climate also means an abundance of anxiety about keeping those unsightly veins hidden.
No one wants to be the only one wearing long pants during Girls’ Night Out or opting out of a beach trip because they’re afraid to bare their legs.
The good news is, at Viva Wellness we have a solution! But first, let’s talk about the difference between spider veins and varicose veins.
Spider veins are dilated capillaries. Capillaries are normally so small that they can’t be seen through the skin. But when dilated, they become visible and resemble spider legs (hence, the name). Spider veins are rarely a medical issue, but many people seek to eliminate them in order to enhance the appearance of their legs.
Varicose veins are enlarged veins in the legs. They are caused by venous insufficiency, which prevents the proper flow of blood and allows it to pool in the leg veins. Varicose veins show up as bulging blue blood vessels beneath the surface of the skin. Sometimes, they are just cosmetic, but they can also cause pain, swelling, blood clots, and other medical issues.
What can you do about varicose veins and spider veins?
At Viva Wellness in San Diego, we offer sclerotherapy, a treatment that helps to eliminate both spider veins and varicose veins.
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution directly into the blood vessel. The solution causes the vessel to scar. The blood then reroutes through healthier veins, and the collapsed blood vessel is reabsorbed into local tissue.
More than one treatment is sometimes required, and it may take a month or more to see full results from each session. Spider veins respond to sclerotherapy within 3 to 6 weeks, and varicose veins within 3 to 4 months.
During your initial consultation, we will look at the treatment area and provide you with an idea of how many sessions you’ll need to achieve optimal results.
On the day of your treatment, you may want to take Tylenol an hour or so before your appointment. No local anesthesia is used because those injections tend to be more painful than the sclerotherapy injections. The needle used for the procedure is very small.
Your treatment will take between 30 and 45 minutes, and you may experience a stinging sensation with the first injection, but it won’t last more than 2 minutes.
Your post-procedure instructions will include the use of a compression garment worn on each treated leg for 1 to 3 weeks. It cannot be removed even for a shower, but you can sponge bathe or shower with the garment covered in a bag purchased from a medical supply store. Even a garbage bag will work.
You will most likely experience some bruising, redness, and possibly hyperpigmentation, but these will go away within a couple of weeks.
