Eliminate Wrinkles and Frown Lines with Xeomin

These days, there are an abundance of anti-aging non-surgical cosmetic procedures available on the market. This is wonderful, as it makes it much easier for each person to find exactly the right procedures to fit their needs and lifestyle. On the other hand, it can also be somewhat daunting to sift through and understand all the options.

At Viva Wellness, we make it a point to help simplify some of the information about available products and services so our patients can make informed decisions with confidence.

Last month, we discussed some of the similarities and differences between Botox and Dysport, two anti-aging cosmetic injectables that help eliminate the appearance of fine-lines and wrinkles.  Of the many formulas out there, Botox and Dysport are often discussed together because they both contain botulinum type A, which works to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles.

Today we’re introducing Xeomin, a third cosmetic injectable that also contains botulinum type A.

What is Xeomin and how is it different from Botox and Dysport?

Like Botox and Dysport, Xeomin uses the same active neurotoxin ingredient and is FDA-approved to improve moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (also known as glabellar lines). Like the other two formulas, Xeomin works to paralyze the muscles that cause these wrinkles.

But unlike Botox and Dysport, which differ in the weight of the proteins they contain, Xeomin contains zero carrier proteins. In fact, it is known as the “naked Botox” because contains only a single ingredient: botulinum type A.

What are the advantages of Xeomin?

Xeomin closely resembles Botox in terms of its onset (5 to 7 days, compared to the 2 to 5 days for Dysport) and its measurement (1 unit of Botox = 1 unit of Xeomin, compared to 2.5 units of Dysport), so it has no particular advantages in terms of results.

The main advantages of Xeomin’s absence of protein carriers are:

  • Lower probability of allergic reactions
  • No need for refrigeration

The lower probability of allergic reactions may be somewhat theoretical, as allergic reactions to both Botox and Dysport are extremely rare.  The need for refrigeration, however, does result in higher shipping costs, as both Botox and Dysport must be packed in dry ice. This gives Xeomin a particular advantage because it allows doctors to pay less – and therefore charge less for the product.

The difference in price, however, has not proven significant enough to sway loyal Botox users to switch over to Xeomin. For those just beginning to explore cosmetic injectables aimed at eliminating frown lines and wrinkles, however, Xeomin is a great place to start.
