What is HCG?

HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, which is a hormone that is produced by all individuals, but in especially large amounts by women during pregnancy. It’s also a hormone that stimulates the production of other hormones throughout the body, which affects the body’s metabolism, muscle tissue, digestion, liver functions, and much more.

How does HCG affect weight loss?

HCG is responsible for feelings of nausea (morning sickness) during pregnancy, so it’s no surprise that it has the same appetite-suppressing effect in people who aren’t pregnant (although thankfully without the nausea). With a reduced appetite, patients in an HCG diet program can eat less without uncomfortable hunger pangs that can derail motivation and progress. Additionally, because hormonal imbalances are often a factor behind weight gain—through thyroid deficiencies or menopause—HCG’s hormone-producing aspects can help.

What does the HCG diet program involve?

HCG injections are only one component of the HCG diet program, which also involves a healthy, restricted-calorie diet. The food you can eat on the HCG diet will vary, but most calorie plans range from 500 to 1500 calories per day, focusing on portion control and lots of vegetables and proteins (including chicken breast, lean beef, white fish, and certain shellfish), with some fruits and healthy grains mixed in.

What about exercise?

While it’s important to be active and avoid sedentary activities on any diet plan, there is less of a focus on exercise in the HCG diet program due to the restricted calories—which your body needs more of when working out. However, one of HCG’s other benefits is that the elevated hormone levels in the body (particularly testosterone) keeps you from losing muscle while you diet.
