Your smile is your most beautiful accessory, and when it’s at its fullest, it reaches all the way to your eyes. A joyful facial expression is magnetic and contagious. And the more you’ve radiated joy over the years, the higher the likelihood that you’ve developed crow’s feet.
What are crow’s feet?
Crow’s feet are the fine lines and wrinkles that branch out from the outside corners of your eyes. They begin as dynamic wrinkles caused by smiling, laughing, and squinting, but then over time, a loss of collagen and elasticity, thin skin, UV exposure, and a lack of oil glands in the area around your eyes, causes them to deepen and remain in place even when you’re not smiling. These are called static wrinkles. fillers for your face
How to get rid of crow’s feet
There are a few things you can do to minimize the depth and appearance of crow’s feet, such as staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure, wearing protective eyeglasses, and using an eye cream with an SPF, but these measures won’t prevent them from developing.
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are popular cosmetic treatments for eliminating crow’s feet. When injected into the treatment area, these neuromodulators temporarily immobilize the wrinkle-causing muscles around the eyes. But for those who prefer to retain their full facial expressiveness, dermal fillers are a great option for minimizing the appearance of crow’s feet while still allowing your smile to reach your eyes.
Dermal fillers for crow’s feet
Crow’s feet aren’t all bad. They help give sparkle to your animated joyful expressions—so not everyone wants to get rid of them altogether. These days more and more cosmetic practitioners report that their clients are skipping the Botox and Dysport, and opting instead for dermal fillers to soften their crow’s feet.
Dermal fillers work to plump up the skin, eliminating fine lines and wrinkles and helping to restore your youthful appearance while still allowing you to retain your facial expressiveness. Some of the dermal fillers we use to soften and minimize crow’s feet at Viva Wellness include:
Juvederm – This smooth gel filler works beautifully in the thin skin where crow’s feet develop. It uses hyaluronic acid, a natural ingredient in human skin, to help draw water to the treatment area, plumping up the skin and filling in the fine lines and wrinkles. Juvederm can help minimize the appearance of crow’s feet for up to year.
Restylane – Restylane also uses hyaluronic acid to fill in fine lines in wrinkles all around the face, including crow’s feet. It adds immediate volume and fullness, and results last 6 to 9 months.
Belotero – The lightest dermal filler on the market, Belotero uses hyaluronic acid to plump up skin and fill in fine lines. It’s best for treating the superficial lines etched into the uppermost layer of skin. Results last up to 6 months.
Sculptra – The Sculptra formula contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which minimizes your crow’s feet while also stimulating collagen production. So while you get the immediate effect of filling in your wrinkles, you also get results that improve over time and last up to two years.
How to prepare for the procedure
During your initial consultation, your doctor will review your medical history, listen to your concerns, and discuss your aesthetic goals. Be sure to take the time to ask any questions you have about the procedure, the doctor’s training and experience, and what to expect going forward. Pay attention to how you feel during this consultation. It’s important that you feel comfortable and confident before committing to any cosmetic procedure or practitioner.
Prior to your procedure there are some things you can do to minimize the risk of bruising and swelling at the injection site. These may include avoiding blood-thinning medications, certain supplements, and/or topical skin products for up to a week before the treatment. Your doctor will provide more specific instructions during your consultation.
What to expect during and after the procedure
On the day of your procedure, it’s important to arrive at the office with a clean, makeup-free face. If you do come in with makeup, you’ll be asked to remove it before the treatment. Once your face is clean, we’ll apply a topical anesthetic to help minimize any pain and discomfort during the procedure, which will last approximately 20-minutes.
Afterward, you may experience some slight swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection site. Your doctor will provide you with post-procedure instructions to keep these side effects to a minimum. These instructions may include:
- Use of ice packs and topical supplements
- Acetaminophen for pain relief
- Avoidance of alcohol for a day or two
- Avoidance of strenuous exercise for a couple of days
- Avoidance of intense heat and sun exposure
- Use of gentle cleansers
You’ll notice your results right away, and they’ll last from 6 to 18 months, depending on the formula, the treatment area, and your adherence to post-procedure instruction. It may take a few days for swelling and redness to subside. You’ll also want to remember that dermal fillers are temporary, and follow-up sessions will be required to maintain results long-term.
Besides being minimally invasive and requiring no downtime, dermal fillers provide the added benefit of natural-looking results. At your next lunch date, your girlfriends might remark about how amazing you look, but no one will suspect why. That will you be your secret to share—or keep to yourself.
