It seems like every other month, a new fad diet surfaces. One day, we’re told, “Eat meat only.” The next day, it’s, “Don’t eat meat at all.” Then, “Drink beet juice,” or, “Don’t cook your food.” In the past few decades, we’ve seen a dizzying number of diet plans come and go – some crazier than others (“Tapeworm Diet” anyone?).
At Viva Wellness in San Diego, we have a theory about why this is the case:
Losing weight is not easy, but we all really want it to be.
Recent studies show that Americans are getting fatter. A survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control found that in 2012, 65.2 million Americans were overweight (with a body mass index of 25 to 29.9) and 67.6 million Americans were obese (with a body mass index of 30 or higher). For the first time, obese Americans outnumber those who are overweight. And the majority of them want to do something about it.
According to a 2014 Gallup poll, 54% of Americans who see themselves as overweight want to lose weight. So why are Americans getting fatter? Our theory about this is almost the same as the one we mentioned earlier: Losing weight is hard but keeping it off is even harder.
And yet, every day in magazines and on television, we hear the stories of people who lose hundreds of pounds and keep them off successfully. What is their secret?
Doctors help boost weight loss!
While fad diets come and go, the scientific nature of weight loss remains the same. To lose weight, a person has to burn more calories than they take in. And sustainable weight loss requires lifestyle changes, not just a few weeks of eating only steak or drinking only beet juice.
A recent government-funded study involving 347 obese people in a two-year clinical trial on weight loss revealed the important role of doctors in the success of their patients’ weight loss efforts.
In the study, patients who rated their doctors highest in the area of helpfulness during the trial lost an average of 11 pounds – compared to an average of 5 pounds for patients who gave their doctors the lowest ratings on helpfulness.
At Viva Wellness in San Diego, this comes as no huge surprise for us. Every day, we see with our own eyes how far the support of a doctor can go in helping patients to set and meet weight loss goals. Doctors can present viable weight loss options that fit the specific needs of an individual patient. So, for our patients, the days of jumping from one fad diet to the next are over. Collaboration with a trusted doctor also provides the necessary support that bolsters patient motivation to follow through on lifestyle changes and ultimately achieve weight loss goals. To us at Viva Wellness, the importance of the doctor-patient relationship has always been a given.
