Sclerotherapy is a prevalent treatment for spider veins and varicose veins (leg veins). It is also used to treat the symptoms caused by these conditions such as aching or swelling. During the procedure, the patient is injected with a very small needle and solution directly into the affected vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell and stick
together. Over time, the vessel will turn into scar tissue that fades from view. The number of veins injected varies depending on the size and location of the veins and the patient’s overall medical condition.
Sclerotherapy works very well for most patients and it is estimated that 50-80% of injected veins are eliminated with each Sclerotherapy session. Typically, spider veins respond to treatment in three to six weeks and larger veins in three to four months. If the veins respond to the treatment, it is rare that they will ever return.
Treatment typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and patients may feel mild discomfort during the initial injection but this feeling does not last for more than two minutes. During your initial consultation, you will be advised as to how many treatments are needed to achieve your desired results.
