Eyebrows have often taken a backseat to lids and lashes when it comes to eye makeup priorities, but bold brows have made a huge comeback on the fashion scene. That’s great for those lucky few with gorgeous full eyebrows. Unfortunately, not everyone is quite so lucky. Most of us require concentrated time in the mirror with the meticulous application of eyebrow pencils and color gels to achieve the illusion of brow volume.
Well guess what? At Viva Wellness in San Diego, we can help you get the full brows of your dreams—and give you back those 15 minutes every morning!
Introducing…microblading for eyebrows, a semi-permanent tattooing process that mimics the fine strokes of eyebrow hairs.
Wait, did you say tattoo?
Yes, in the most basic sense of implanting pigment under the surface of the skin. Many people already get eyeliner, lipliner, and other permanent makeup “tattoos” but microblading for eyebrows is a different process. Instead of using a machine that often results in too-thick or shaky lines, microblading involves a pen-like device with several tiny needles at the tip, dipped into cosmetic-grade eyebrow dye before tattooing subtle, natural-looking eyebrow hairs into the skin. The precision is truly remarkable.
Does microblading for eyebrows hurt?
Some people are more sensitive to pain than others, but anyone familiar with plucking and waxing will probably sail right through the procedure. Even so, we prep the brow area with topical numbing cream and reapply during the process to reduce discomfort. Taking ibuprofen (but not aspirin) before the procedure will also help keep you comfortable.
How long does microblading take?
We recommend setting aside a couple hours for your treatment, along with time for a shorter touch-up appointment within a week or so. The first appointment is about structure, design, and building hair strokes. Touching-up involves seeing how well your skin healed and retained the pigment, and making adjustments in symmetry and volume as needed.
How do you design the brow shape?
Before we even begin the microblading process, we use several different measuring tools to help achieve the best proportions and symmetry for your bone structure. We also choose a pigment that is best suited to your skin tone and hair color for the most natural look possible.
How permanent is semi-permanent?
Because the pigment isn’t implanted as deep as regular tattoos and permanent makeup, microblading only lasts a few years (three, on average). After the initial touch-up session, many people choose to get regular touch-ups around every six months.
What is the healing process like?
Aftercare is essential for the best results, so for the first 10 days following your microblading procedure you cannot wet, sweat or pick at brows, wear makeup, or expose your eyebrows to direct sunlight. It’s also important to remember that the final results will not be apparent for about two weeks after microblading. Your brows will scab and initially appear much darker, but the color will fade about 30 to 40 percent. Slight redness, itchiness and mild swelling are also normal.
Can anyone take advantage of microblading for eyebrows?
Almost anyone can achieve the natural look of full brows with microblading, but there are some restrictions. You are not a candidate for the procedure if you:
- Are under 18
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have been on Accutane within one year
- Get Keloid scars
- Take Retin-A or Retinols (you must stop taking one week before and 30 days after the procedure)
- Have irritation of the skin of any kind including blemishes, pimples, rash, psoriosis, eczema, rosacea, or sunburn
- Have health issues including diabetes, epilepsy, a pacemaker or major heart problems, HIV, hepatitis or any other viral infections and/or disease, or common sicknesses such as cold and flu
- Have had an organ transplant
- Are undergoing chemotherapy
- Don’t generally heal well and develop infections easily
- Your old tattoo is still too dark
