Finding the right skin treatment to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles is a lot like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears—some treatments are too invasive and some aren’t aggressive enough. Searching for a treatment that’s “just right” can take time, money, and stress that leads to even more wrinkles on your face.
But many people have found their “middle ground” procedure in microneedling. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling prompts skin to stimulate the production of collagen, the natural compound that gives skin its smooth texture and plump, youthful structure. Collagen breaks down over time, especially when sun damage is involved, leaving you with dry, thin, wrinkled skin. And while there’s still no way to reverse the aging process entirely, microneedling can at least rejuvenate and restore your skin’s youthful appearance.
How does microneedling work?
There are different types of devices used for microneedling, but each involves tiny needles that puncture the outer layer of your skin. Your body’s natural defense mechanism then prompts your skin to repair the microscopic tears, which are too small to be seen with the naked eye. As part of the repair process, your body will produce collagen to create new tissue and fill in fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in fresher, younger-looking skin.
What other skin issues can microneedling treat?
In addition to filling in wrinkles, microneedling is also great at treating stretchmarks and scars from injuries or acne, even keloid scars. Treating keloid scars with microneedling is especially effective when combined with powerful scar cream.
What happens during the procedure?
The first step of the microneedling process is the application of an anesthetic cream to your skin. Anything involving needles will not be entirely pain-free, but the anesthetic will mitigate any discomfort (many patients describe it as a sandpaper-like sensation). The dermatologist will then apply a sterile saline solution for lubrication and prepare their preferred device. At Viva Wellness, we use the Eclipse MicroPen Elite, which is fitted with a sterile, single-use cartridge with 12 micro-point needles and a high-speed motor to allow for quick, efficient results. The entire process takes approximately 30 minutes.
What happens after the procedure?
After your microneedling procedure, you will notice a bright redness to your skin, similar to a sunburn. Healing times will vary by patient, but on average the redness will last around 2 to 4 days. Some patients heal completely within 24 hours. Your skin will have a noticeable glow directly after healing, but the full results of the treatment will be apparent over the next few weeks and up to 6 months after the procedure.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of microneedling sessions you will need depends on your goals. Deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, and large stretchmarks and scars might need up to 6 treatments, while milder skin issues will only need 3 or 4 treatments. Many patients require only a single treatment once a year. It’s important to note that multiple treatments are typically spaced out by three weeks to a month to allow your skin to fully heal.
